What is In-School Suspension?
In-school suspension is an in-house program to which a student may be assigned for a short period of time in lieu of out-of-school suspension (OSS). It is designed to counteract many of the negative effects of suspension. Instructional time can continue without interruption and special academic help can be provided as needed. This is a program which potentially provides schools with the best opportunity: the student is not sent home, and yet the student is also not in class. ISS Programs typically involve setting aside a space in the school where the suspended students can be carefully monitored, where they can be on task, and where they can be separated from their peers.
